OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Notre Dame rowing team completed its first regatta of the 2015 campaign with a second day of solid times on Sunday at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. The No. 12 Irish claimed four runner-up results and improved boat times in nearly every event in the final race session to close their season debut on Sunday on Melton Lake.
Notre Dame’s first varsity eight kicked off the morning against No. 9 Yale, Minnesota and Central Florida. Yale (5:55.419) took the race victory, with the Irish lineup of coxswain Alex Techar, Carlee Beckler, Sarah Kappers, Hilary Shinnick, Joanna Mulvey, Alexis Olson, Elizabeth Kelley, Anna Kottkamp and Ailish Sheehan claiming runner-up honors at 5:57.835. Minnesota (6:02.606) and Central Florida (6:03.068) rounded out the first varsity eight finishers.
Yale repeated with its second straight victory during the first varsity four event, posting the fastest heat time of 6:35.165. Notre Dame’s lineup of coxswain Mikaela Prego, Bailey Amenabar, Rose Doerfler, Katherine Lumetta and Stella Willoughby (6:42.367) took second place. Minnesota (6:50.827) and Central Florida (7:01.517) capped the heat finishers.
The Bulldogs notched their third straight win in the third varsity eight, crossing the finish line in 6:07.962. Notre Dame’s lineup of coxswain Samantha Hedrick, Elizabeth Walter, Christine McGough, Bridget Adam, Christine Schindele-Murayama, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Erin Dolan, Kate Trankina and Meredith Swartz placed second in 6:26.060.
Yale (6:02.863) continued the momentum in the second varsity eight, while the Irish contingent of coxswain Reilly Kearney, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sarah Russel, Ellen Gleadow, Catherine Wagner, Katie Skorcz, Emily Horton, Madeline Loper and Gretchen Bruggeman finished in third place with a time of 6:09.153.
The top 10 ranked Yale crew put the finishing touches on the Sunday sweep by posting a 6:42.137 readout in the second varsity four. Coxswain Jill Ryan, Megan McKeon, Madelynn Conlin, Mairead Dunne and Moira Hamilton added another Notre Dame runner-up time of 6:49.307.
Notre Dame resumes its 2015 regatta schedule on March 28 at the Big 10-ACC Double Duel in Columbus, Ohio.
