MILWAUKEE, Wis. – No. 11 Notre Dame fell at Marquette, 1-0, in BIG EAST men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Valley Fields. The Fighting Irish now are 5-3-4 overall and 1-2-1 in BIG EAST play.

Marquette (6-5-2, 4-0-0) produced the game’s lone goal in the 16th minute as Sebastian Jansson scored off a pass from Anthony Selvaggi. The win keeps the Golden Eagles on top of the BIG EAST Blue Division standings.

It appeared as though Notre Dame cracked the scoreboard first in the early stages of the match, but a Leon Brown goal was called off due to an Irish foul.

Notre Dame outshot Marquette 17-12, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Marquette goalkeeper David Check made seven saves in the match, while Irish senior Will Walsh had three saves. The Irish produced four corner kicks, while the Golden Eagles had none.

Along with having seven shots saved, the Fighting Irish had three attempts hit the frame. Brendan King hit the post in the 32nd minute and Adam Mena sent the ball off the crossbar in the 44th minute. Greg Klazura hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute.

Notre Dame junior forward Ryan Finley had a game-high seven shots, which included five on goal.

“It’s hard to be critical with our team because there were a lot more positives than negatives in the game tonight,” said Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark. “We just have to hold our confidence and stick together because things will turn around for us. We had so many good chances tonight and it was just a matter of inches from it being a very good night for us.”

Tonight was Notre Dame’s first loss in regulation this season. The other two Irish setbacks occurred in double-overtime.

The Fighting Irish are back in action at BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday. Kickoff between the Irish and Hoyas is slated for 1:00 p.m. (ET) in Washington, D.C.
