#11 Irish Suffer OT Defeat At Virginia, 1-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — No. 11 Notre Dame dropped a heartbreaking overtime loss to Virginia on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 1-0 at Klockner Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chances were limited for both the Irish and Cavaliers in the opening 45 minutes of play. Keagan McLaughlin came up big for Notre Dame in the seventh minute, making a big save after a Virginia forward was in on goal to keep the contest scoreless.

Notre Dame’s best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 27th minute. Solid buildup play led to Jack Lynn firing a shot from the six-yard box but a Virginia defender made a perfectly timed last ditch block to keep the match level.

The Irish began the second half on the front foot and their best chance of the stanza came in the 50th minute, as Paddy Burns connected with Aiden McFadden, who fired a ball across the goal but a Cavalier defender deflected it out for a corner. After that the defenses of both teams locked down any threats to send the match to overtime at 0-0.

Just over four minutes into the first overtime period the Cavaliers found the back of the net off a free kick to take all three points in the victory.

HEAD COACH CHAD RILEY’S TAKE

“Firstly, I am proud of the team’s effort. I thought we had some very good moments in the game. Coming to UVA is always a tough game and credit to them, they found a way in OT. Now it’s time to learn and move on to prep for Duke.”
