100th Notre Dame Basketball Season Will Feature 17 Home Games And 11 National TV Contests In 2004-05

The 100th season of Notre Dame basketball will be highlighted by 11 nationally-televised contests and a 17-game home slate that will feature visits from non-conference foes DePaul and UCLA and BIG EAST rivals Boston College, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse. The 2004-05 campaign will also mark Notre Dame’s 10th as a BIG EAST member.

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey returns for his fifth season at the helm. The Irish mentor, who has compiled an 85-44 record over four seasons, will have four returning starters from last year’s team. Last year’s Irish squad finished with a 19-13 record and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the National Invitation Tournament.

CBS Sports will televise three Notre Dame home games during the ’04-’05 season with all three of those contests taking place at the Joyce Center. The CBS cameras make their first appearance of the season at the Joyce Center on Sunday, January 30 when the Irish face defending national champion Connecticut. Notre Dame’s matchup with UCLA on Sunday, February 27 also will be televised by the network will be the second meeting between the two schools in as many seasons. Last year, the Irish earned a 75-60 victory against the Bruins in Los Angeles. UCLA will be visiting the Joyce Center for the 22nd time and first time since December 20, 1995. The final CBS broadcast will take place on Saturday, March 5 versus Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale.

The Irish will begin the year by playing eight of their first 10 games at the Joyce Center. Notre Dame plays its first three contests at home and will open up the season against Harvard on Friday, November 19. This will be just the second-ever meeting between the two schools. The first and only matchup occurred on January 3, 1942 at Notre Dame with the Irish prevailing 39-31. The first-ever matchup between IPFW and the Irish will take place on Tuesday, November 23, while another first-time opponent Charleston Southern pays a visit to the Joyce Center on Friday, November 26.

Notre Dame’s only two road games before the start of BIG EAST play will be against Big Ten foes Michigan and Indiana. The Irish will meet the defending NIT champion Wolverines on Saturday, December 4 at noon and then travel to Bloomington to face the Hoosiers on Wednesday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. Both of the games will be televised by ESPN. Notre Dame and Michigan will be playing each other for the first time since an NIT quarterfinal matchup at the Joyce Center on March 15, 2000. An Irish team last played at Crisler Arena on January 16, 1993. Notre Dame returns to Assembly Hall for the first time since December 4, 2001. The Irish have lost eight straight to the Hoosiers, including last year’s 66-63 setback at the Joyce Center.

Notre Dame will conclude the month of December with five straight home contests. The Irish play host to DePaul on Saturday, December 11 on ESPN2 as the two schools face each other for the fourth straight year. That game will be followed by matchups against Army (Sunday, December 19), Marist (Wednesday, December 22), Western Illinois (Tuesday, Decemeber 28) and Samford (Thursday, December 30).

The Irish open up BIG EAST play at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. against Seton Hall on Wednesday, January 5. Notre Dame then begins its longest BIG EAST homestand of the season against Villanova, Syracuse and St. John’s. The Irish meet the Wildcats in their conference home opener on Saturday, January 8, followed by a matchup against the Orange on Monday, January 10 on ESPN. The three-game home slate concludes against St. John’s on Saturday, January 15.

The Irish will then play three consecutive road games against West Virginia (Wednesday, January 19), Georgetown (Sunday, January 23) and Villanova (Wednesday, January 26).

Notre Dame’s next four games following that road trip will all be nationally televised. The January 30 matchup against Connecticut is set for CBS, followed by an appearance on ESPN versus Syracuse on Saturday, February 5. Notre Dame will face Boston College at home on Tuesday, February on ESPN2 and then will travel to Pittsburgh Pittsburgh on Saturday, February 12 on ESPN.

The Irish conclude the regular season by playing four of its final six games at home. Notre Dame faces Georgetown on Wednesday, February 16 at the Joyce Center before playing back-to-back road games against Providence (Saturday, February 19) and Connecticut (Monday, February 21). The Irish-Huskies matchup will be televised by ESPN and will mark the final regular-season road game.

Notre Dame concludes the regular-season campaign with three consecutive home games against UCLA, Rutgers (Wednesday, March 2) and Pittsburgh.

The BIG EAST Championship will once against take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City and is slated for March 9-12.
