#10 Irish In Second Place After Day One Of Dale England Cup

April 26, 2014

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Strong winds caused a shift in the event schedule, but the weather did not prevent the opening session of racing from taking place on Friday at the Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon. The University of Notre Dame rowing team won three of its four heats to claim second place with 37 points, narrowly behind the 40 points of event leader Rhode Island. Host Indiana is in third place with 23 points, followed by Alabama with 20 points.

“I think we had a very good week of practice and it showed today in our races,” Irish head coach Martin Stone said. “We look to continue to improve in rounds two and three of the Dale England Cup.”

The Notre Dame third varsity eight opened the day with a victory against Indiana, gradually pulling into the lead after the 2,000-meter mark. The Irish crew held on at 6:43.70 to down the Hoosiers by nearly one and a half seconds (6:45.10).

Indiana gained a measure of revenge in first varsity four racing. The Hoosiers bounced back after Notre Dame took a lead in the second 500 meters, overtaking the Irish and holding on for the heat win in 7:12.10. Notre Dame posted a runner-up time of 7:14.20.

The Irish took convincing decisions in the final two races of the afternoon, beginning with the second varsity eight. Notre Dame pushed out to a substantial advantage in the first 500 meters and never looked back, posting a winning time of 6:24.80 to down Indiana by nearly eight seconds (6:32.10).

A victory in the first varsity eight capped the opening day of racing for Notre Dame. An early lead once more powered the Irish lineup to a near seven-second win (6:17.90) in the heat with the Hoosiers (6:23.20).

The morning session of day two of the Dale England Cup is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (ET) on Lake Mellon.
