#1 Irish Drop Series Finale to Louisville, 7-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 1-ranked Notre Dame baseball team overcame two deficits but it was not enough as they fell to Louisville, 7-5, Sunday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Notre Dame came back from 0-1 and 2-4 deficits to hold a 5-4 lead heading into the eighth. Louisville scored three runs in the eighth to regain the lead that they would not relinquish to take the final game of the series.

How It Happened

Louisville jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first. They scored their first run on a wild pitch and took an early 1-0 lead after one.

The Irish battled back in the fourth and took the lead after scoring two in the inning. Carter Putz scored the tying run for the Irish after Brooks Coetzee III reached on an error on the fielder’s choice. Later in the inning Jack Brannigan scored on the sacrifice fly from David LaManna to give the Irish a 2-1 lead.

Louisville regained the lead in the sixth after plating three runs in the inning. With just three innings left, the Irish trailed 4-2.

The Irish battled back in the top of the seventh with three runs of their own to take back the lead. The first run of the inning came as LaManna scored on the bases-loaded walk from Ryan Cole. The tying run scored in Zack Prajzner on the sacrifice fly to right from Jared Miller. The Irish took the lead back with an infield single from Carter Putz that scored Spencer Myers. That gave the Irish a 5-4 lead after seven innings.

Louisville scored three runs in the eighth off a three-run home run from Isaac Humphrey to take back the lead. The Irish were unable to put any runners on in the ninth and fell 7-5.

Notre Dame heads back home for a five-game homestand starting on Tuesday. The Irish will take on Northwestern at Frank Eck Stadium on March 22 with first pitch set for 4 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast nationally on ACC Network. Admission is free for all regular season games at Eck this season.
