Seth Voltz 2023-24 Baseball Staff

Head coach Shawn Stiffler announced the addition of Seth Voltz to his coaching staff in 2022. Voltz joined the Fighting Irish after spending the 2022 season under Stiffler at VCU, and previously worked as an assistant coach at Wofford College.

In Voltz’s first season with the Irish (2022-23), Notre Dame pitchers ranked fourth in the ACC in hits allowed per nine innings (8.49) and WHIP (1.37). Pitcher Aidan Tyrell was named ABCA All-Mideast region second team and All-ACC second team.

While at VCU, Voltz led the Rams to the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship, winning 17-consecutive games and earning the three-seed at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional where they notched wins over North Carolina and Georgia. VCU finished the 2022 campaign with a 42-20 record, and ranked in the top 20 in Division I in ERA (3.91 – 9th), WHIP (1.29 – 12^th) and walks allowed per nine innings (3.12 – 10^th).

Voltz was an assistant coach with the Wofford Terriers from 2017-20. He helped the Terriers win the first Southern Conference Regular Season Championship in program history in 2021, after a 36-21 regular season and a 21-9 SoCon record. The 492 strikeouts in the 2021 campaign is the second-most in SoCon history and the third-most in program history (Wofford joined the Southern Conference in 1997). Elliot Carney was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned first team All-Conference honors, while Dalton Rhadans was first team All-Conference as a relief pitcher.

During the 2018 season, the Terriers posted a 36-23 overall record, the second-most wins in school history and the most league wins in school history (15). The pitching staff had an ERA of 4.95 to rank fourth in the SoCon and the 454 strikeouts also ranked fourth. One key to the success of the staff was senior Adam Scott, who was drafted in the 4th round (133rd overall) by the Cleveland Indians. In 2019, the pitching staff posted an ERA of 4.27, which ranked fourth in the SoCon and was the lowest for the Terriers since 1983. The 492 strikeouts for the staff were the third-most in school history.

Prior to Wofford, he was on the coaching staff at UT Martin from 2015-16. While there, the Skyhawks improved significantly during those two seasons. Voltz was a vital member of the Skyhawks’ vast improvement in 2015 and 2016 as UT Martin amassed 18 Ohio Valley Conference wins. The 2016 season saw the Skyhawks win the most games in a season since 2011, while Voltz’s pitching staff struck out a program-record 369 hitters. He worked with Alex Evans, who accounted for eight wins in 2016. Voltz also coached Patrick Bernard, the program’s all-time saves leader, and Jackson Zarubin who signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Angels.

After graduating from VCU in 2012, where he was a four-year letterwinner under Stiffler, he began his coaching career as the Rams’ volunteer coach. The VCU pitching staff posted a stellar 3.86 staff ERA under Voltz’s instruction in 2014, allowing less than a hit per inning (.259 opponent batting average). The Rams posted similar numbers under Voltz in 2013, piecing together a 3.87 team ERA to go along with a .274 opponent batting average. One of his pitchers, Seth Greene, led the A-10 and ranked 10th in the nation in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.05) in 2013.

In his playing career, Voltz was a workhorse on the mound from 2009-12. He made 73 career appearances, started 47 games and threw eight complete games, all are top-10 in VCU program history. He is second in Ram Baseball history with 338.1 innings pitched in his career.
